Undercurrent 2025 | Craft + Design Canberra
About the Event
The Undercurrent Design Market is one of Australia's premier contemporary craft markets, bringing together more than 50 accomplished makers from across the country. Hosted by Craft + Design Canberra, the market features exceptional work across jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, woodwork and other creative disciplines. This video captures the energy of the market, the diversity of its makers, and the vibrant atmosphere that makes Undercurrent such a highlight of Canberra's creative calendar.
Behind the Scenes
For an event like this, mobility is everything. I kept my setup lightweight, working primarily with a monopod and 24–70mm lens, allowing me to move quickly through the crowds and capture authentic moments without disrupting the experience.
For shoots like this, varied lighting and ever-shifting exposure can be a real challenge for exposure and white balance. For event photography, shutter speed can typically be increased as high as you want, but this will ruin the look of video (see 180° shutter speed rule) meaning exposure shifts can be a delicate balancing act! All that said, it is plain as day that Gorman Arts Centre was so perfect for the event.
Filming Undercurrent was a fantastic opportunity to spend a day immersed in Canberra's creative community. It was wonderful catching up with so many talented makers, many of whom I'd worked with on previous projects.
Shoutout to Fabio, who made me a seriously amazing pizza for lunch and was such a warm and kind person.
Also to the incredible, amazing team of staff and volunteers from Craft + Design Canberra (in particular, the delightful Kelsie).
